Adobe not having a Ukrainian option was such a pain — up until now we literally had someone transcribing by hand. It already feels like a lifesaver.

★★★★★ Olga Mykhalets · producer, Ukrainian production company

It has many languages that Premiere doesn't natively offer, and it can work offline if you have sensitive footage.

Worth every single cent — it's honestly 100/10. I'll definitely recommend it to my friends.

I'm a producer at a Ukrainian production company — honestly, it already feels like a lifesaver. Adobe not having a Ukrainian option was such a pain; up until now we literally had someone transcribing videos by hand. This tool does the whole thing right inside Premiere, and it's fast. The whole editing team is already on board.

You know the pain.

A note from the builder

I'm an editor. Same as you.

For years I watched Adobe roll out Speech-to-Text in English, then Spanish, then French — and then just stop. My Ukrainian projects? Polish? Turkish? "Not supported." So I typed every subtitle by hand. Hours and hours, for every project.

Then I tried the cloud tools. They worked — but they wanted my footage on their servers, my credit card on file, and $15 every month forever. For client work under NDA? No way.

So I built CaptionLab. The plugin I wanted to exist. Local. Fast. 99 languages. One price. No subscription. Your footage stays where it belongs — on your own computer.

If this sounds like something you need too — try it. Three days free, on your own footage, before you pay a thing.

Yes. After the one-time setup, no internet needed. Your audio never leaves your computer.

// WILL IT WORK ON MY COMPUTER?

Works on any Mac with macOS 11+ (Apple Silicon or Intel) or Windows 10/11 — with optional NVIDIA GPU acceleration on Windows.

Questions

Before you ask

How do I install it?
Two steps. First, install the free ZXP Installer app (skip if you already have one), then drag the CaptionLab .zxp file onto it — it installs automatically, no Terminal. Then, the first time you open it inside Premiere, click "Install AI Engine" — it automatically downloads the AI engine it runs on (Python, ffmpeg, and the Whisper model, ~3 GB total, 15–20 minutes depending on your connection). After that one-time setup, it's ready to use offline, forever.
Do I need an internet connection?
For the AI engine — only once, for the first-time setup (Python, ffmpeg, and the Whisper model, ~3 GB total). After that, transcription itself runs 100% offline; your footage and audio never touch the internet. Separately, license activation needs a quick one-time online check, plus a periodic recheck afterward to stay valid — unrelated to transcription.
Do I need an API key or an OpenAI account?
No. Unlike cloud tools, CaptionLab runs the Whisper model locally on your own computer. No Deepgram, no Groq, no OpenAI credits. Nothing to sign up for.
Is my footage uploaded anywhere?
Never. Every byte of audio is processed on your own machine. Perfect for client work under NDA.
Which Premiere Pro versions are supported?
Premiere Pro 2022 through 2026 (versions 22.x–26.x). Works on Apple Silicon (M1–M4) and Intel Macs, and on Windows 10/11.
Is there a Windows version?
Yes! CaptionLab runs on Windows 10/11 as well as Mac — same features, same one-time price. On Windows it automatically uses an NVIDIA GPU if you have one (see the speed comparison below), and falls back to CPU if not.
What languages are supported?
All 99 languages Whisper supports — including Ukrainian, Polish, Turkish, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Arabic, Thai, Romanian, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Greek, Hebrew, Persian, Urdu, and dozens more.
(Windows only) How fast is it, and do I need a specific GPU?
On Windows, CaptionLab automatically uses your NVIDIA GPU if you have one — it also works fine on CPU alone, just slower. This table is Windows-only (on Mac, CaptionLab uses Apple Silicon's Neural Engine instead, which is separately fast). Approximate real-time factor — minutes of audio transcribed per minute of processing:
• No GPU (CPU only): ~0.5–1x
• GTX 1660 Super: ~2–2.5x
• RTX 2060 / 3050: ~3.5–4x
• RTX 2070 Super (measured): ~4.7–4.9x
• RTX 3060: ~4–4.5x
• RTX 3060 Ti / 3070: ~6–7x
• RTX 3080: ~9–10x
• RTX 3090 / 4070: ~10–11x
• RTX 4080: ~13–14x
• RTX 4090: ~18–20x
Estimates, not benchmarked on every card — laptop GPUs typically run ~70–80% of the desktop figure above.

Changelog

What's new

v1.0.5 August 2026 Just released
🎬 Try it before you buy it
  • There's now a free 3-day trial of the complete plugin — every model, every language, real subtitles in your timeline. No card, no account.
  • The three days start at your first transcription, not at download. Installing the engine and pulling a multi-gigabyte AI model can take an evening, and none of that comes out of your trial.
🇲🇲 A model built for Burmese
  • Burmese is one of the languages the standard models handle badly — on real footage they produced the wrong script entirely, or looped the same syllable for minutes. A Burmese-specific model is now in the Models tab, and it produces real, readable Burmese on the same clips.
  • This one came from a customer who asked for a refund because his language didn't work. If yours doesn't either, tell me — that's how this got built.
🔧 Installs that repair themselves
  • A half-finished download used to be trusted forever: every retry saw the file was "there" and skipped it, so the same broken install came back no matter how many times you clicked. The installer now checks each piece actually runs, and re-fetches it if not. Stalled downloads now time out and retry instead of hanging.
v1.0.4 August 2026
⏱ Captions land on the word
  • Caption timing is now measured against the audio itself instead of trusting the AI's own timestamps — so a caption no longer appears while the speaker is still silent. On a real news package this cut total misalignment by about 60%.
  • Fixed the cases where captions showed up seconds early: after long pauses, over B-roll with room tone, and after music. Captions also hold a moment longer instead of vanishing the instant the speaker stops.
✂️ "Fixed words" is now "Max words"
  • It's a ceiling, not a quota. Set 4 and a caption will be 3, 2 or even 1 word when that's where the line logically ends. A caption is never split across a sentence, breaks at commas, and short words like "not" or "the" are never left stranded alone on screen.
  • Default captions follow sentence structure too — proper line length, reading speed, and no more hyphenated words split across two screens.
🔊 Quiet speech no longer skipped
  • Audio recorded well below the level of the rest of your video — a location interview cut against a loud studio voice, for example — used to be dropped silently. Levels are now balanced before transcription, so those parts get captioned too.
v1.0.3 July 2026 Previous release
🧠 Choose your AI model
  • New Models tab — switch between Large-v2, Large-v3, Large-v3-turbo (~6x faster), or Small right from the panel. Download, switch, or delete anytime, with live progress and disk usage shown.
Large-v3 is noticeably more accurate on these languages, straight out of the box:
UkrainianArabicTurkishPolishHebrewCzechHungarianIndonesianRomanianThai
✂️ Word-by-word captions
  • New Caption length control — set exactly how many words appear per caption (1 to 8). Perfect for the pop-on-screen style used in Shorts, Reels, and TikTok-style edits.
🔧 Reliability
  • Fixed a Windows issue that could get the one-time AI engine setup stuck on download, including on networks with antivirus/HTTPS-scanning software.
  • Fixed subtitle generation on multicam sequences and Merged/Synchronized clips.
v1.0.2 July 2026 Multicam fix
🎬 Multicam & Merged Clips
  • Fixed "No media found" / "No clip selected" on multi-camera sequences and clips with externally synced audio.
  • Audio is now rendered directly from the timeline instead of chasing each clip's source file, so it works for multicam sequences, Merged/Synchronized clips, nested sequences, and clips with audio effects or gain applied.
  • Status message now reflects what's actually being transcribed (clip, multiple clips, full sequence, or multicam) instead of just the model name.
v1.0.1 July 2026 Windows is here
🪟 Windows
  • CaptionLab now runs on Windows 10/11, in addition to Mac — same features, same one-time price. Automatically uses an NVIDIA GPU if you have one.
  • The background engine now starts automatically on login, and a manual "Start server" option is available as a fallback.
🐛 Fixes
  • Fixed a false "Setup failed" message some users hit during the one-time AI engine installation.
  • Fixed a licensing edge case where using CaptionLab across multiple Premiere Pro versions on the same computer could incorrectly count as separate devices.
  • General reliability improvements to the install and update process.
v1.0.0 June 2026 Initial release
✨ Features
  • Auto-generate subtitles from audio, right inside Premiere Pro.
  • 99 languages supported — including the ones Adobe's built-in captions skip.
  • Transcribe in the original language or translate straight to English.
  • Works on a selected clip or a full sequence, respecting gaps between clips.
🔒 Privacy
  • 100% offline transcription — your footage and audio never leave your machine.
  • No API keys, no accounts, no telemetry.
